Khon Kaen University, in collaboration with the Program Management Unit for Human Resources and Institutional Development, Research and Innovation (PMU-B), is implementing a research project to develop a learning ecosystem model integrating Coding & AI for youth aged 15–25. The initiative aims to equip participants with advanced knowledge and skills in coding and artificial intelligence to meet the demands of the digital era.
This project focuses on building future-ready human capital by promoting computational thinking, creativity, and technological innovation. It supports Thailand's transition from being a technology consumer to a creator, strengthening both public and industrial sectors.
From January 22–24, 2022, the Hackathon & Pitching: E-SAN Thailand PMU-B Coding & AI Academy was officially launched at the Faculty of Education, Khon Kaen University and Rachawadee Hotel, Khon Kaen. The opening ceremony was presided over by Prof. Dr. Sompong Klainongsuang, Director of PMU-B, with remarks from Prof. Dr. Sumalee Chaicharoen, Project Leader, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Isra Kanjak, Dean of the Faculty of Education.
.
“On behalf of PMU-B, I am truly delighted to collaborate with Khon Kaen University and its network in developing a learning ecosystem for Coding & AI for youth,” said Prof. Dr. Sompong Klainongsuang, Director of PMU-B.“Such activities are often centralized in the Bangkok region, but we now recognize the importance of empowering youth across all regions to learn a 'third language'—the language of the near future—which is coding. It connects us to global platforms and fuels the development of creative innovations.”
He concluded by emphasizing that this initiative provides a vital platform for youth—especially in the Northeastern region—to unlock their full potential. He expressed hope for continued collaboration between PMU-B and its partners in the future.
“It is a great honor for the Faculty of Education to be recognized by PMU-B,” added Assoc. Prof. Dr. Isra Kanjak, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Khon Kaen University.“This initiative serves as a powerful catalyst, particularly for the Northeast, thanks to support from stakeholders across sectors. We strongly believe this effort will contribute meaningfully to Thailand’s development in the years ahead.”
Project Overview: Youth Coding & AI Ecosystem Model – PMU-B & Khon Kaen University
Khon Kaen University, in collaboration with PMU-B, launched a research-based learning ecosystem integrating Coding & AI aimed at youth aged 15–25. The project saw wide outreach via social media and public events, resulting in over 1,000 applicants, meeting its target. Participants were then selected to progress through three structured phases:
Round 1: Basic Coding & AI Skills
Participants underwent training using the CodeCombat platform, which teaches programming through gamified learning across three modules:
Computer Science
Web Developer
Game Developer
Four proficiency levels were used: Beginner, Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced. A parallel teacher-coach workshop was also organized to empower educators and parents to support learners.
Outcomes:
Beginner: 188
Basic: 70
Intermediate: 121
Advanced: 101➡️ 199 participants advanced to Round 2.
Round 2: Advanced Coding & AI Skills
This phase focused on professional-level development via Power Class, covering five advanced career pathways. It was also open to the public for free via PMUB's platform.
Participants advancing to Round 3: 65 total, across the following fields:
Blockchain & Fintech: 5
AR-E-sport: 12
BCG Industrial IoTs Factory: 14
Data Science: 17
Personal AI: 13
These students came from top institutions across Thailand, representing provinces such as Khon Kaen, Chiang Rai, Nonthaburi, Samut Sakhon, Ubon Ratchathani, Bangkok, and more.
Round 3: Hackathon & Pitching (Jan 22–24, 2024)
Held at the Faculty of Education, Khon Kaen University and Rachawadee Hotel, the Hackathon emphasized hands-on learning, group collaboration, and application of advanced skills to develop real-world solutions and innovation.
🗣️Remarks from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Isra Kanjak:
"This Hackathon & Pitching event under the PMU-B Coding & AI Academy is a meaningful opportunity. It has been made possible through the collaboration between PMU-B, academic experts, and industry leaders including CodeCombat, Sun Smart Tech, Intellegist PLC, ClusterKit, BOTNOI Group, Precision Dietz, Let’s Code Thailand, The Asia Foundation, and many others. This initiative lays the groundwork for future industrial value creation in Thailand."
.
As part of the finalist selection process, PMU-B awarded five outstanding youth participants with international study visit scholarships to the United States, recognizing their exceptional potential in Coding & AI.
The award ceremony was filled with joy and excitement, celebrating the following recipients:
Mr. Weeraphat Namkiri – Mae Fah Luang University
Mr. Pitikorn Klaisamniang – Loloo Tech Company
Mr. Natthaphong Tangsatienrapab – Computer Engineering (Digital Media), Khon Kaen University
Mr. Methee Yingyongwattanakit – Khon Kaen University
Mr. Sittatka Jarassang – Khon Kaen University
Beyond the formal awards, several other participants—regardless of prize status—were invited by industry partners to join study tours and internship opportunities, gaining valuable hands-on experience in real-world tech environments.
